Title: Precision neurology: Genetics, biomarkers and personalized therapies

Abstract

Advances in genomics, neuroimaging, and molecular diagnostics are transforming neurology from a “one-size-fits-all” approach to truly personalized care. This session will explore how genetic profiling, fluid and imaging biomarkers, and digital phenotyping can refine diagnosis, predict disease progression, and guide targeted treatment in disorders such as epilepsy, neurodegenerative diseases, and neuromuscular conditions. Emphasis will be placed on translating these tools into routine clinical practice, addressing challenges in access, cost, and ethical use of genetic data. By integrating precision diagnostics with individualized therapeutic strategies, precision neurology aims to improve outcomes, reduce treatment failures, and move toward proactive, preventive brain health on a global scale.

Audience take away from presentation:

  • Understand the core concepts of precision neurology and how genetics, biomarkers, and personalized therapies are reshaping diagnostic and treatment pathways.

  • Real-world examples of biomarker- and gene-guided therapies, including how they can shorten the diagnostic journey and reduce trial-and-error prescribing.

  • Insight into the practical steps for implementing precision approaches in diverse healthcare settings, including resource-limited environments.

  • Be more aware of the ethical, economic, and access-related challenges surrounding genetic testing and data use, and leave with strategies to address these in their own practice or health system.
